Some fun facts about the month of August...

  • The month of August is often referred to as the "dog days of summer" but not because it has to do with dogs. The star Sirius, also known as the dog star, rose at the same time as sunrise during the month of August in ancient Roman times; hence, the name for the last full month of the summer.

  • August is named after Augustus Caesar, founder and the first emperor of the Roman Empire. He was posthumously adopted by his maternal great-uncle, Gaius Julius Caesar.

  • Although civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., is honored in birth month of January, he is best known for his famed "I have a dream" speech that was given on Aug. 28, 1963.

  • On Aug. 24th in 79 A.D., the volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted and destroyed the city of Pompeii.

  • Some famous people born in August include Martha Stewart, Martin Sheen, Jeff Gordon, Deion Sanders and Halle Berry.
